i have a mp3 player and would still be using it but for some reason my new computer cant put music in the mp3 player. So for now i am using a used ipod that my dad gave me. Although it took me a month or so to make it work. But i would like to use the mp3 player if it was my choice.

And people that know absolutely nothing about technology are trying to explain why some bit on their phone is better than mine, whether it truly is a higher spec or whether that impacts my usage of my phone or not. It’s probably because of sheer numbers, but Android fanboys feel much worse than iPhone fanboys ever were. Smartphone OSes have become the new sports teams. I love the times I can debate the merits of one platform or my preferred platform (Windows Phone) over another intellectually. Unfortunately, that’s a rare occurrence.

Ok this isn’t exactly in the spirit of what you’re probably looking for, but headphones. I end up having to try to get writing done in many chaotic environments. Trains, planes, waiting rooms, coffee shops, lobbies, my agent’s living room, etc. My earbuds are easy to carry everywhere so they mean I can always “be alone” when I need to. (Most people are trained to realize when they see them that you can’t hear them and don’t give a damn even if you did. Thank you surly teens.) I’ve thought about investing in schmancy noise canceling ones but haven’t done it yet.

If you get to looking at software, too, don’t laugh, I recommend every writer use a learn-to-touch-type program. Think about it. If you can make your typing flawless and faster than it is, you are saving yourself thousands of future hours of work in both actual writing time and correcting time. Everyone these days “knows how to type” but it’s such a basic skill that can be improved on.

That pen sounds AMAZING. I am pretty devoted to my tiny LED floodlight, which both stands on its own and clips to things, giving me enough light to read or write even if I’m in a dark room where people are trying to sleep. (Apparently its official name is the Fulcrum LED Multi-Flex Task Light.)

Sorry, to me this just screams: hackers all you have to do to get people to install viruses directly onto their laptops is mortar a flash stick into a wall somewhere public.

I love the idea, but I’m not sure how practical it is to balance my laptop so I can plugin to a usb stick hanging out of a wall and manage to do anything with it.

You’re not wrong; that was pretty much my reaction as well. If you want to strike up a conversation, do so. If the person appears so unapproachable that you need some kind of pretense to say hello, they probably don’t want to be bothered by you. Hell, if I’m reading a book in a public space, it means I want to read my book, not talk with random strangers about it.
